UPCOMING EVENTS and reminders - May and June!

News and Happenings in Miltonvale Park – Spring 2017

If you are looking to try yoga, there will be eight free classes at the Milton Community Hall on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. and Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. beginning May 1.   Angelie Carter has to teach some classes as part of a yoga certification course. Angelie can provide mats, and modifications (e.g. to convert postures for chair yoga, if you think you might get down, but not back up!).

Exercise classes will continue on Mondays and Fridays at 9 a.m., as long as there are at least ten people attending.

Last year coffee club continued over the summer, so if you find yourself out and about on Mondays and Fridays at 10 a.m., please drop in to the hall to meet your neighbours and share a treat!

The Milton Community Hall is hosting its annual lobster takeout on Saturday, May 6. Pick up is from 3-4 p.m. and tickets should be purchased in advance, by May 3. The price is still $20, and, along with the one pound cracked lobster (in the shell) we will be serving biscuits or rolls, potato salad, coleslaw, jellied salad, tomatoes, and a tasty dessert – probably carrot cake or a chocolate cake. If anyone wants to put on an apron and a sexy hairnet and help putting the dinners together, please contact the hall – 902-566-3154 or miltoncommunityhall@gmail.com.

Memorial Hymn Sing on Sunday, May 7th from 7:00 - 9:00 at the St. John Anglican Church with Vance and Emily Bryant, The Retro Frets and the Just For Fun Band performing.  If you would like to choose a song to be sung in memory of a loved one, contact Miriam Hooper at 902 368-2011 by April 25th. All are welcome to attend.

On Tuesday, May 9 the North Milton WI is hosting a “Meet Your Neighbour” Night -starting with a pot luck supper at 6 p.m. at the hall. Folks will also hear a bit about the history book project underway. Everyone is welcome to attend –you don’t have to live in North Milton.

There will be a Crohn’s & Colitis fundraising spaghetti supper at the hall on Friday, May 12. There are a limited number of tickets that are being sold in advance. Miltonvale Park chef Jen McKenna will be preparing the meal, and can be contacted through Facebook to buy tickets. https://www.facebook.com/events/288375784917778/

The hall’s annual Rhubarb Social is Thursday, May 25th from 6-7:30 p.m. The incredible dessert buffet is $10 (and there will be a few desserts for folks who may not be rhubarb fanatics). Children under 12 eat for $5 and preschoolers are free.

Kendall Docherty and his family band will be onstage on Saturday, May 27 to entertain folks beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, and if you would like to pick up yours in advance, contact the hall.

The Thursday night summer card parties start on June 1st at 7:30 and continue until the end of September. Please let the hall know if you might be able to help out in the kitchen on an occasional Thurs. evening to serve lunch.

Milton Community Hall  is once again involved in the PEI Mutual Festival of Small Halls and we are expecting a fantastic show on Monday, June 19th at 7:30 p.m. Patrick Ledwell and Steve Poltz. The show is called Hootin’ and Hollerin.’ Patrick is from Miltonvale Park, and should be a familiar funny man, to most. Steve was born in Halifax and is now based in California, but spends a lot of time performing on the road. He is a prolific songwriter, with songs ranging from“Hey God I'll Trade You Donald Trump For Leonard Cohen" to Jewel’s smash hit “You Were Meant For Me.” Tickets are $25 – and there is a $5 discount for patrons under 30.

The hall has received funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program to hire a student, and we are accepting resumes from students aged 15-29 who would like to gain lots of experience in organizing and promoting events. The Association of Rural Community Halls was also approved for a summer position for a student to further the work of that organization. The Community of Miltonvale Park was approved for a watershed worker, to work with the Cornwall and Area Watershed Group – so we are looking for someone who likes the great outdoors. The Community also hopes to hire a student (or two… depends on the funders!) to supervise a summer recreation program at the park and work on our history book project. More information will be online soon – but if you know any students who might be interested -have them contact Shari at the hall miltoncommunityhall@gmail.com or council office admin@miltonvalepark.com.

The annual WI Roadside Clean Up is happening on Saturday, May 13. Beginning in early May there will be roadside clean up bags available at the hall - and in the big blue signboards by the four community mailboxes in the community. There is also a contest whereby those who participate in the roadside clean up can win money – check peiwi.ca to learn how (there are some entry forms in some of the blue signs) The WI is cutting down on the number of bags they distribute, so feel free to use any clear bag to gather litter and leave it along the sides of the roads (or take them home and put them back out closer to the 13th, if you think they may not stand up to a long time on the side of the highway). The Community Council is also having a draw for $150 cash from names of people who have picked up 150 pieces of garbage by the end of June, so if you think you have picked up a significant amount of garbage – send your name in for the draw (eg – one full WI clean up bag or 3 grocery store bags, if you don’t want to count every piece!) You can earn more than one ballot, if you someone who picks up a lot of litter. And kudos to the folks who used the Community Park over the winter, everyone was so great to dispose of those little special doggy doo doo bags! Much appreciated! Also – there was a dehumidifier in the parking lot at the park – if you know anything about it, or hear of one which perhaps walked away from somewhere… give me a call.

Remember to reserve Saturday July 1st for the annual Canada Day BBQ at the Community Park at 413 Sleepy Hollow Road from noon til 2 ish. In the event of rain, the celebration will move to the Milton Community Hall.

Reminder – of the Child Bursary Program for Miltonvale Park residents, if you are signing your children up for summer programming/camp/sports or other art or cultural classes or activities. Up to $75 reimbursed per child per year, http://miltonvalepark.com/files/118.pdf

Green Initiatives Rebates are available for replacement 6L toilets, low flow showerheads or HE washers. http://miltonvalepark.com/files/192.pdf

And now that it seems spring has arrived and summer will follow, development officer Sandy Foy is keeping regular Monday morning office hours 8 a.m.-1 p.m. to answer your development questions and accept permit applications.

Next Council meeting is Wednesday May 17 at 7:30 p.m.
