Learn to be Knotty - Join the seniors (50+) of Miltonvale Park and members of the Wheatley River 4-H Club in a "Learn to Be Knotty" event at the Milton Community Hall on Friday, March 10, 2017 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Come try your hand at basic embroidery stitches and learn about knots used in fishing from retired fisherman Edwin Wall, who will also tell about lobster fishing and display several of his model boats. Those skilled at embroidery are most welcome to come mentors others who are learning. This is a drop in event - and lunch will be available. This event is free for members of the 4-H Club and their families and free for residents of Miltonvale Park, and by donation for others. Food Sovereignty and Climate Change: nurturing human and ecological communities in stormy times. Cooper Institute’s third annual social justice symposium in honour of Father Andrew Macdonald will take place on Saturday, March 11th. The theme for this year’s event is “food sovereignty and climate change; nurturing human and ecological communities in stormy times”, and will feature a presentation by guest speaker, Dr Nettie Wiebe. As an added treat, Island musician Teresa Doyle will perform some of her songs. While it’s generally understood that climate change, due to elevated temperatures, drought and extreme weather events, has an impact on food production, the opposite is also true. That is, our current global food system – the way that we produce, distribute, trade and consume food – is a significant contributor to climate change. The social justice symposium will offer an opportunity to consider this paradox. What do we need to do, in a changing climate, to reconfigure our food system to make it more sustainable, and to ensure that everybody has access to enough food? Nettie Wiebe farms near Delisle, Saskatchewan, growing organic grains and pulse crops, and raising cattle. She served in elected leadership positions of the National Farmers Union for ten years and was the first woman to lead a national farm organization in Canada. She recently retired from teaching ethics at St. Andrews College, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Wiebe is an active participant in public discourse on sustainable agriculture and rural communities, trade agreements, women’s equality, human rights, peace, economic and environmental issues and food sovereignty. Her recent publications include co-editing two volumes on food sovereignty and several articles about changing farmland ownership in Canada. Due to school cancellation and poor road conditions the blanket making activity has been postponed to Monday, Feb 20 at 10:30 am. If there is fabric left - the activity will continue on Fri Feb 24 after exercise class. 

Join other reisdents of Miltonvale Park on Monday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m. to review the past year at the Milton Community Hall and to look forwardto the year ahead. Everyone welcome. Consider serving on the board of directors or joining our volunteer list.

Bring your sweetie or a group of friends to the Sat. Feb 18, 2017  Valentine's Supper at the Milton Community Hall, 7 New Glasgow Road, Rte 224, North Milton.

Tickets($55 /couple or $27.50 each) must be purchased in advance  for this delicious roast beef supper, including soup, salad, and cheesecake, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Miltonvale Community Players are back onstage with another look at life in the country. Catch up on the antics of Turnip John, Reta, Andy and Meg, Old Johnstone and the neighbourhood pets - and meet some new folks too!

Performances take place at the Milton Community Hall, Thursday -Saturday evenings, January 26-28 at 7:30 with a 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $12. Canteen available.

Christmas Comes to Milton

The Milton Community Hall is celebrating Christmas Saturday, November 26 with its annual Christmas Craft Fair from 9:30 -3:30 p.m. and “A Down Home Christmas Concert” with Janet McGarry and Wildwood that evening at 7:30.
The Craft Fair will see 30 tables of crafts, baking, books and giftware in the two levels of the recently renovated community hall in North Milton. For the two dollar admission charge, shoppers receive a ballot for door prizes which have been donated by the crafters.  There is no charge for children 12 years and under. Canteen service will also be available, as will fresh biscuits.

Christmas music will be featured Saturday evening as Janet McGarry, along with Serge Bernard, Dylan Ferguson, Denise MacLeod and Gail Mullen combine their love of bluegrass and Christmas music.

For over seventeen years, Janet McGarry has continued to be a dominant presence in bluegrass music, Her voice is centred and rooted in her heart, which is perhaps why she is so often recognized for having an honest and crystal clear voice, drawing comparisons with some of the most soulful voices of our time.
