EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS - July 6, 2025

June – Thanks to all who participated in June’s ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk. Miltonvale Park and Charlottetown have been named the two finalists for PEI, and were asked to submit further information to ParticipACTION for their decision, which will be announced by July 22. Thanks to summer student Zach Addison for working diligently to organize many events! Participants walked 6622.73 km - which put us way past the 5270 km needed to get to Mount Milton in BC - so thanks everyone! Mayor Hal Parker walked 330 km in June, and three residents moved more than the mayor in June - Congrats to Phil Jefferson, Dana Coles and Leone C.

 

Canada Day - Thanks to all those who joined us for Canada Day at the Miltonvale Community Park on Canada Day and to those who helped make the day such a great success! Congratulations to Claire Mathson, who was named Volunteer of the Year, to Linda Sullivan, the 2025 Good Neighbour of the Year, and to James Marjerrison who won the Milton Community Hall’s July 1st 50-50 draw

 

Miltonvale Community Park - The school-age drop-in day program is now underway at the Miltonvale Community Park. Jason, Sadie, and Zach are planning lots of activities and can supervise school-aged children. They plan to be at the park Monday-Friday 9-6 and 12-4 on Saturdays and Sundays. It is a good idea to confirm they are there before sending young children, in case they are absent due to illness. The park phone number is 902-368-7587. With the wet forecast for next week, they have decided to move Sports Week later, and so will have Craft Week, July 7-11and July 21-25 will now be Sports Week. Friday, July 18, will be Tie Dye Day. Sunday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m.- Top Gun: Maverick on the big screen at the Milton Community Hall. Free for Miltonvale Park residents and by donation for others.

Sweet Tooth Toonie Bingo will be held on Mondays in July, except July 14 (July 7, 21, and 28) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Bring a toonie to get two bingo cards and win tasty prizes - this week from the Red Barn Bakery. Pre-registration appreciated to MiltonMVPs@gmail.com.

Garden Club – meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month, with the next meeting on July 8 at 6 p.m. The activity this month is garden signs -but we expect lots of chatter about how everyone’s garden is growing. They also have a private Facebook group. If you are interested in taking part in the community garden, please contact Ryan at 902-368-3090 or Gardenatmvp@gmail.com. Folks are welcome to come help harvest and work in the garden on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. The garden club has been funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. Wednesdays - beginning July 9 at 9 a.m. Chair Step Dancing, a relaxed and joyful version of step dancing with Olivia Blacquiere! Join us at Milton Community Hall for an hour of music, steps, and laughter on Wednesdays in July from 9-10 a.m. Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion. Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24, and 31, from 5:00–6:00 pm - Puppets, PJs, and Joyful Jams -Join us for a cozy and creative music experience designed for little ones, ages 0–8! In your favorite pajamas, we’ll sing original songs, dance with puppets, play instruments, and practice mindful breathing — all in a fun, relaxed environment. It’s a wonderful way to have fun, make music, and connect before heading home to brush teeth, and tuck in your little ones, who’ll be all ready for bed!

Come as you are or change into your favorite PJs at Milton Community Hall. Perfect for children and their grown-ups to connect, move, and make joyful memories together.

The 4-class series is funded by PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being and costs $10(for the series for Miltonvale Park children, $20 for children who live elsewhere, and $8 per class for drop-ins, if space is available. The Milton Community Hall is planning a “Racism- What Can I Do?” workshop for Saturday, July 12 at 6 p.m. A light meal will be provided to interested participants at 5:30 p.m Join actors Trilby Jeeves and John Ghiz, to practice responses which can be used when people find themselves in uncomfortable situations. Wild Foods of PEI Book Launch and Mushroom Presentation - Monday, July 14 from 5:30-7:30 - Don't miss this great opportunity to meet Kate MacQuarrie, an award-winning biologist and naturalist with more than 30 years of experience eating wild foods, tracking wild animals, and interpreting the stories this land tells. We are hosting a book launch event for Kate's new book, Wild Foods of Prince Edward Island, on Monday, July 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the book launch, which includes a book sale and signing, a presentation about the featured plants, and local plant and fungi identification from Kate. There will also be a mushroom Q&A with a special guest, local mushroom expert Ken Sanderson. Funded by the PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Space is limited and Miltonvale Park residents have priority booking. Monday, July 21 at 8 p.m. The Cornwall and Area Watershed Group is hosting a Bass Fishing Derby Fundraiser! Join in for some friendly competition and a chance to win a prize for the biggest catch of the night. The cost to register is $15. All proceeds will go towards the stewardship of the North River. Friday, August 1 - Meet Your Neighbour Night at the Park - watch for details! 

NEW - Saturday, August 2nd from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm -Tour the Naturalization Gallery with the Cornwall and Area Watershed Group: This tour is a unique chance to experience all of PEI's native trees while travelling comfortably on a gravel path! The Naturalization Gallery is a walking trail within the Terry Fox Sports Complex, in Cornwall. It serves to preserve the history of the Wabanaki-Acadian forest, and is a showcase of the native forest that once covered this Island, but has sadly since been reduced to less than 10% of PEI's land use. Join the CAWG crew for a tree ID lesson and tour of the Gallery! Saturday, August 2nd from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm at the Naturalization Gallery (Dream Park parking lot).

Radon – The municipality has just signed up for a campaign to happen in the fall of 2025, where we will have 100 radon detectors for residents to put in their homes for 100 days and then be sent off for results to be obtained (and emailed directly and confidentially back to residents).
